A recent study sheds light on the connection between obesity and oral health?
At Image Dental in Applecross we know that suboptimal dental health has been previously connected to conditions in the body including cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer?s and dementia. Now, it has been discovered through a study conducted overseas, that poor oral health is also connected to obesity in women.
The study involved 1,000 women who were roughly 65 years of age. Taking into account BMI (Body Mass Index), the ability to chew food, the last time the subjects visited the dentist, the amount of teeth affected by untreated tooth decay and the measurements of their waists, they were able to compile the results and form the conclusion that, in general, women who had less than 20 natural teeth in their mouths were more likely to struggle with obesity issues! They also found that women who abstained from visiting the dentist were again more likely to have issues with obesity.
At Image Dental in Perth, we found some of these findings astounding?
The finding that we at Image Dental were surprised to hear, was that those who have issues with obesity are less likely to take proper care of their teeth, and are more likely to neglect their oral health routines. Since we are well versed in the effects poor oral health can have on the body, we are very disappointed with this finding. At Image Dental in Perth, we fully understand the importance of dental health and the effect it has on the body, and is why we constantly encourage our patients to adhere to strict oral health routines daily.
